I have a proven track record as a highly committed nursing professional. My high levels of motivation and achievement stem from the numerous complex challenges I have encountered. I grew up with parents who frequently moved across the country in search of manual labor jobs. My father, a Vietnam War veteran, tried to escape his past with only a high school education and welding skills. My mother, another working-class survivor, earned her GED while my brother and I were in grade school, taking on odd jobs, mainly housekeeping. Eventually, she obtained her bachelor's degree, advancing from CNA to LPN and RN. Despite significant challenges, my family worked hard to prepare their children for stable families and careers. My upbringing instilled in me a deep commitment to education; the frequent moves made me resilient, an extrovert rather than an introvert, and adaptable, always ready to embrace diversity and multiculturalism.
In addition to paving the way for a nursing career, my background and life experiences led me to become the American Taekwondo Association’s Colorado State Champion in 2005 and 2006. This experience deepened my appreciation for humility, tranquility, a positive attitude, lifelong personal growth, and the acceptance of both failure and success: qualities such as courage, perseverance, self-confidence, discipline, and leadership skills that I aim to further develop in your program.
Therefore, I am confident that my discipline and determination will enable me to excel in your online master’s program. At 37, I am in an ideal position to become a distinguished nursing manager and leader, with my family's full support. I am excited to join a program that emphasizes what I find most fascinating and relevant in nursing: leadership, problem-solving, decision-making under pressure, conflict resolution, and the implementation of the nursing mission. I am eager to fully engage with a wide range of issues, from legal and ethical questions to strategy, management, and marketing. After meeting my husband, we continued to relocate for his career, allowing me to experience diverse nursing standards, protocols, and cultures across the United States, gaining specialized knowledge in areas like ICU, ER, and Orthopedics. As a Certified Nursing Assistant, I valued the importance of compassion, the human touch, and the privilege of being the patient's advocate. Working as a Certified Medical Technician expanded my understanding of medications and side effects, and enhanced my communication and teamwork skills.
As a residential case manager at a short-term rehabilitation facility, I improved my skills in charting, care planning, and the regular reevaluation of goals. Since 1996, I have served my community as an RN in Hospice, ICU, ER, Cardiac, Trauma, Orthopedics, Step Down, and home health, focusing on teamwork, open communication, patient advocacy, and educating patients and families. I also developed and wrote a grant for pain management, providing the orthopedic floor with permanent CD players in inpatient rooms to aid the healing process and reduce the length of stay. As a business partner for Playful Pooch LLC, I enhanced my appreciation for customer satisfaction, marketing, and client relationship building through extensive follow-up. Within four months of entering the competitive world of internet search engines, we achieved a #1 ranking, with reward programs, live webcams, advanced holiday scheduling, satellite radio, and gained a base of five hundred clients within six months. We reached record profitability, generating new business through media exposure and follow-up from various promotions, including events and unique venues. I have also prioritized giving back to my community through volunteer service.
While in Montana, for instance, I organized events for the radio station Hot 101.7, serving as their promotional director. We fingerprinted and photographed children to create emergency kits in case they went missing, enabling families to start the search process immediately and effectively. I volunteered for the Aids Walk, set up tents, answered questions, and provided literature. With Playful Pooch, we offered free housing and training for Siberian Huskies with Polaris Husky Rescue in Colorado. In Corpus Christi, TX, I assisted the Gulf Coast Humane Society, helping to provide radio exposure for pet adoptions. From Race for the Cure to Run for the Angels, I have opened my mind and heart to patients both outside and inside the hospital, celebrating an unwavering optimism about the resilience of the human spirit. These miracles can be achieved through the support of a united community. I have also learned Spanish, as knowledge of America’s second language is crucial for someone aspiring to be a Chief Nursing Officer.
