Smiling woman in blue scrubs and headphones with icons like a globe and medical symbols around her. ID badge with flag. Modern healthcare theme.
Aspiring Latina nurse embraces diversity, highlighting her dedication to global health and community care in her BSN personal statement.

I am a nurse with Indian and Mexican heritage, born and raised in California. I have bachelor's degrees in Spanish and English. I am fluent in English and Spanish, speak some French, and am currently learning Malayalam, a language spoken in South India. I am also a certified Water Safety Instructor.

From a young age, I spent a lot of time in hospitals visiting my younger brother, who had diabetes and was often hospitalized, and my mother, who had kidney issues. Even as a child, I noticed that while some nurses were efficient, they were just doing their job, while others went beyond that. Some nurses showed personal kindness to patients and visitors, understanding how we felt and how much a kind word and a smile meant. I aspire to be one of those ‘smiling’ nurses who remember what it was like to be a young child in a hospital's unfamiliar and somewhat intimidating environment.

I have worked to improve the lives of South Asians with a non-profit organization called the Sri Lankan Trade and Information Office, which is currently focused on building hospitals in areas heavily affected by the recent civil war. This has given me insight into the challenges of providing healthcare and health education in impoverished regions. I am thankful for the opportunity to help improve this situation.

I volunteer as a Clinical Care Extender at the ____ Regional Medical Center, where I have shadowed and assisted nurses in various departments. I have been involved in direct patient care and have gained an understanding of health professionals' backgrounds and work habits. This experience has affirmed that nursing is my calling, and I am committed to pursuing it.

I have always aimed to dedicate my career to helping others, and I now wish to do so in the personal and direct manner that nursing offers. I possess the qualities necessary to be a successful nursing practitioner.  I am regarded as organized, mature, and, most importantly, compassionate. I enjoy working as part of a team and have excellent observational skills. I understand that successful applicants to the program need to demonstrate challenging work, enthusiasm, and determination, and I am confident that I can fully meet these criteria.

My unique ethnic background has exposed me to two diverse cultures from an early age. Although I have not lived abroad, I have traveled to India, Mexico, and Spain to pursue my language degree. I consider myself highly culturally aware and sensitive to cultural differences. I get along exceptionally well with people from all backgrounds and ethnicities.

I have a particular interest in health education and preventative medicine. I aspire to work as a nurse in the Global South, providing health information and education to assist as many people as possible with their healthcare challenges.

I recognize that there will be many qualified applicants for the program. However, I believe I have the personal qualities, motivation, determination, and passion for excellence that would make me an asset to my class, the college, and the nursing profession.

Thank you for considering my application for the BSN Program.
