Haitian Applicant to DNP Program as a Family Nurse Practitioner

I love diversity in experience as much as I do in people and cultures. Thus, during my 19 years serving as a nurse, first as an RN and then as an FNP, I have worked in a broad variety of areas including Nurse Education, ambulatory care, long-term care, and home care services.  I have successfully completed a Masters Degree and post-masters program and I feel strongly that my extensive nursing experience, both academic and in practice, will enable me to hit the ground running and excel in a DNP Program.  I have researched DNP Programs thoroughly and I feel strongly that I am the best fit with ____ University’s (GCU) DNP Program because of the rigor and sheer breadth of your curriculum.

My greatest contribution to my society would be to provide the highest level of care possible, always in full accordance with scientific evidence-based care. I look forward to decades serving as a mentor/educator for new generations of RN and NP students as well as fully devoting myself to practice and serving on medical mission trips back to my home country, Haiti, since these people are in the greatest need of medical assistance and nursing care. Born and raised mostly in Haiti, I am fluent in Creole and fully bicultural, which provides me with an enormous and beautiful opportunity to teach nursing in Haiti, especially after I gain more experience as a DNP and my finances allow me to do so. Probably, I will fall over dead nursing in Haiti in another 40 or 50 years, in P-au-P, the town where I came into existence.

One salient achievement in nursing was serving as an Adjunct Instructor in Medical/Surgical Nursing at the College of ____, in ____ New York, throughout much of 2009. I spent more than four years at Brightstar Healthcare in Duluth, Georgia and my focus in this position was on Home and Community Care. This area of nursing made a great impression on me, and I hope to complete my DNP Practice in an area related to community care and nursing care in the home.

Throughout my nursing career I have volunteered mostly as part of health care teams organized through my church and have given a lot of my time to the organization and execution of yearly community health fairs. This has inspired my profound commitment to helping, empowering, educating, and improving the health and wellness of underserved individuals suffering from a broad variety of medical issues.

At ten years old, I spent several hours in the waiting room at our local hospital, and I watched nurses go by dressed in white from head to toe.  I immediately became enamored by their professionalism and sense of service: the joy they clearly found in what they were doing. That was my first epiphany.
