I was born and raised in Indonesia, then lived in Germany for four years before moving to the United States in 1991. I expect to graduate with the Bachelor in Science of Nursing degree in August of this year. I speak English, German, Indonesian and Javanese. My goal is to become a very effective, and highly trained and qualified nurse.
I hold a second B.S. degree in Business Administration from California State Polytechnic University and, having graduated, I took a post as a Manager with Vons Safeway and looked forward to a long and successful future in the world of business. However, my father became very ill and required constant care. I could not work long hours and provide the care that he required. Consequently I left my secure management position in 2008 to care for him. I had never considered nursing as a career until this time.
It was necessary for me to acquire some basic nursing skills in order to care for my father and I soon found myself wanting to learn more than merely basic skills. I also discovered that I enjoyed this taste of nursing more than the world of commerce and so I decided to go to nursing school. It was the best decision of my life and I have thoroughly enjoyed all my nursing training and experience to date. I derive great satisfaction from being able to ‘making a difference’. I regard myself as extremely fortunate to have accidentally ‘stumbled upon’ what I consider to be a true vocation rather than a career choice.
My interest in XXXX Healthcare System was fired when I undertook a clinical rotation in Maternity and Mental Health at XXXX in Orange, California. I consider myself fortunate to have been exposed to the very positive nursing culture apparent at St. Joseph. The recognition of patient dignity and excellence of treatment were clearly in place and pursued by all the staff with whom I came into contact. I am also aware that XXXX is at the ‘cutting edge’ in the use of new medical technology and, naturally I wish to have the opportunity to acquire knowledge that is as up to date as possible. I have also been impressed to read of the awards given in recognition of excellence in nursing at XXXX. I seek to work and train in the best healthcare environment possible and regard XXXX to be the hospital that will provide that for me.
I am aware that there will be many well qualified applicants for the residency positions. However I genuinely believe that I am an exceptional candidate. I fully share the values, passion and commitment that I have seen demonstrated by XXXX’s. staff and I undertake to uphold and advance those values in my work.
My work ethic is demonstrated by the fact that I not only obtained my B.S. in Business Administration while working full time but actually excelled in the program. I can promise even greater commitment in my nursing work and studies as these are dearer to me than was the study of business subjects. I believe therefore that you may have full confidence that I shall be among the very best performers of those participating in the residency program. I undertake to apply myself fully and very enthusiastically if my application succeeds.
I have happily studied, worked and socialized with people of many different cultural and social backgrounds. I consider myself to be culturally sensitive and aware and know how important this is in the profession of nursing. I have been the recipient of many ‘customer service awards’ in my pre-nursing career which demonstrates my ability to interact positively with others. I know that nursing is ‘all about people’ and that the most highly qualified nurse is unlikely to be fully effective without a real interest in the patients they treat. I like people and they respond well to me because they sense a genuine and personal interest. Not least, I have a sense of humor and know the value of a smile.
My business studies and experience do have relevance to nursing, indeed more than I had anticipated and have been very useful in my nursing to date. Management requires problem solving skills, leadership, team working, creativity, a willingness to adapt quickly and embrace change, a need to constantly focus on goals and optimum outcomes together with observational skills. I believe that my management background will enable me to bring some useful and unique insights to my class.
The Clinical Rotation Courses taken during my BSN studies have been of enormous value and I gained a significant knowledge and experience by an enthusiastic participation in them. I particularly enjoyed the work related to Community Health as much of it related to disease prevention within communities and I gained an appreciation of the wide variety of exposures and risks experienced in separate communities. This particular course gave me an insight into the significance of environment on health which I know will be of great value to me in the future. I look forward to extending and broadening this knowledge and skills provided by this coursework.
I have sought and obtained additional qualifications and hold those in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and the American Heart Association Basic Life Support. I have undertaken several nursing related volunteer activities including participation in disaster simulations, the care of veterans, community health programs and assisting the mentally and physically disabled with basic skill learning and recreational activities.
I hope to earn the MSN degree and to advance as far as is possible in the profession and to be as useful and effective a nursing professional as possible. I know that inclusion on the residency program at St. Jude will be an enormous aid to me achieving my goals.
Thank you for considering my application.
