Empowered and compassionate, a Palestinian nurse practitioner shares her journey in healthcare and her dedication to making a positive impact in her community.

I am eager to join your master's degree program in nursing because of its outstanding quality and ideal location. My goal is to become a highly skilled nurse practitioner, driven by my deep passion for helping others, particularly the sick. I am a woman who has had to overcome many challenges to achieve my goals. Growing up, education was not prioritized in my family, which is common in Arab societies, and as Palestinian immigrants, my family is also very patriarchal. As a child, my family, especially my father, expected me to dedicate my life to serving a husband and children rather than pursuing a professional career. Consequently, I have spent much of my life challenging these stereotypes and pursuing an education.

From a young age, I have aspired to make a positive impact on the world and strive to improve it. Being Palestinian, a community that has endured suffering and historical persecution, has strengthened my serious and committed nature, making me sensitive to issues of oppression and injustice. Early on, I realized the profound joy I experienced from working in healthcare, which made it a natural choice for me. In high school, I became socially active, joining various student clubs and taking on a leadership role within my family, helping to resolve conflicts. I have gradually come to believe that I possess a gift from God that enables me to effectively comfort those in distress. I find immense fulfillment in caring for the sick and the elderly.

My mother and grandmother have both been seriously ill for years, especially my grandmother, who suffers from various ailments. I have accompanied her to appointments, assisted with bathing, and prepared meals suitable for diabetics. My grandmother has been a significant inspiration for my decision to pursue a career in nursing. Another profound source of inspiration was Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Witnessing so many people suffer made me aspire to become a nurse, so I could be better equipped to assist those in need. As I matured, I recognized that this was my dream and my destiny to fulfill.

As a teenager, I distinguished myself as a volunteer, working in homeless shelters and youth centers, assisting single mothers, and tutoring children and young adults, particularly in diet and healthcare. I have especially enjoyed participating in Community Health Fairs, which deepened my love for nursing. I have valued the opportunity to work alongside nurses, learn from them, observe the significant benefits they bring to society, and see how they make a difference in the community.

I have come to realize that nursing is the ideal profession because nurses are consistently caring and always ready to help, which aligns with my nature. My ultimate aspiration is to have a job that I genuinely enjoy, one that allows me to help people recover when they are sick and safeguard their physical and emotional health. I am particularly interested in researching preventative medicine and ways to reduce infections resulting from surgery. I find post-surgery disorders intriguing because my mother and grandmother have suffered from severe infections following surgery.

Becoming a registered nurse with a master's degree will enable me to fulfill my goal. I view nursing as an exceptional profession that demands both intelligence and compassion. My long-term aim is to become a community health educator and assist underprivileged families. Coming from a disadvantaged group of hardworking individuals who have struggled to achieve anything in life, I am empathetic to the needs of minority groups and those with limited economic resources. I also look forward to volunteering as a nurse, contributing to healthcare in devastated areas of the Developing World.

One of my favorite sayings is that “gifted leadership occurs where heart and soul meet, allowing the leader to soar.” My heart assures me that nursing is truly the right career for me. I am fully committed to pursuing my dream and will work diligently to succeed, dedicating myself to your program. I aspire to be an inspiring example for young women of future generations, demonstrating that nothing can stop a person from pursuing their dreams when heart and mind unite for the long term. I appreciate your consideration of my application to your program.
