I am applying to the nursing program at ____ because it offers a comprehensive and advanced curriculum in nursing, equipping students to address the diverse mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of patients.
I grew up in a small village deep within Yemen. Although I was only eight when we left, I still cherish the memories of the delightful aroma of my mother's special mutton stew, and the sounds of goats bleating and roosters crowing in the morning. Everyone knew each other. Now, I reside in Coney Island, far from my homeland. Yemen is a country where many live on less than $150 a month. A recent article in the Yemen Times reported a dengue epidemic affecting the population there. My Yemeni background and ability to speak both Arabic and English will enable me to better serve New York's diverse patient population.
My fondest memories involve growing up with my loving and supportive family. However, I also recall the hardships and poverty in parts of Brooklyn. New York is a vast city where people often remain strangers. Foreigners can easily feel isolated and out of place. I understand this feeling, as it reflects the experience my family and I had upon arriving here. Attending public schools in Brooklyn was challenging due to language and cultural differences. Yet, these challenges have prepared me to empathize with patients from diverse backgrounds, helping them feel understood.
A verse in the Koran states, "A person should always seek knowledge even if they have to travel more than one million miles to receive it, and after the knowledge is acquired, it should be used to serve humanity." This principle is one reason I embarked on this long journey from Africa to the USA to study nursing. I recognize the profound impact of love in improving the world.
Studying nursing in your program would provide access to medical facilities not available in Yemen, allowing me to learn about nursing practices here. My ambition is to use the knowledge gained to train others in Yemen. However, I understand the importance of first becoming competent. The diverse and inclusive environment at your institution will help me become a compassionate healthcare professional.
